ABOUT J.R. NELSON, OUR COVER ARTIST

Carrots and Tomato Juice painting by J.R. Nelson

Carrots and Tomato Juice oil painting by J.R. Nelson

Oil painter J.R. Nelson is a Bay Area native and Marin County resident whose work can be found in many Bay Area collections. Jae’s recent exhibitions include Marin MOCA, Marin Open Studios, Marin Society of Artists, Sebastopol Center for the Arts, AATS Sonoma County, and numerous juried shows.

Nelson is Jae’s maiden name, which she has used for her entire painting career, but she has also been well known as Jae Wagoner through her work as a Los Angeles–based commercial artist representative. She was one of the pioneers in that field and successfully represented many famous illustrators over a span of 32 years.

Jae is also an organic farmer, garden designer, seed saver, and avid preserver. Her jellies cooling on a windowsill and jars of garlic dills inspired the series of paintings from which images in this issue were drawn. She generously provided the recipes on page 4 to inspire other preservers.
