Try Your Hand at Homesteading Arts

Soapmaking is one of many fun and useful skills you can learn at the
Institute of Urban Homesteading.

Want to up your savvy in the kitchen and garden? The Institute of Urban Homesteading offers an array of hands-on classes to help you do just that. From planning your fall garden to making your own cheese and yogurt, IUH serves up practical and fun skills you can bring to your own home. Here’s what’s coming up during the next week:

Organic Gardening for Fall & Winter
Saturday July 29, 10am–3pm    
Learn about East Bay soils and amendments as you get planting tips for the cooler seasons. Cost: $50–100 sliding scale.

Lather 101 Home Soap Making 
Sunday July 30, 10am–noon  
Make a batch of soap to take home as you learn about ingredients, process, and safety techniques. Cost: $35–75 sliding scale.

Cheesemaking 101: Yogurt, Ricotta, and Feta 
Sunday July 30, 2–5pm 
Learn about the equipment and techniques for making cheese at home in this hands-on workshop. Cost: $40–90 sliding scale.

Canning Extravaganza
Tuesday August 1, 6:30–10pm  
Preserve your harvest bounty! Learn to safely can fruits and veggies, including tomatoes. Cost: $45-90 sliding scale.
