Oakland Joins Nationwide ONE FAIR WAGE Events

On Tuesday, January 19, in cities across the country, essential restaurant workers, and restaurant owners are holding celebratory pre-inauguration events to welcome the incoming Biden-Harris Administration and support President-elect Biden’s #BuildBackBetter plan to provide one fair wage to all workers.

Khalid Kaldi of One Fair Wage describes Oakland’s local event as an opportunity to celebrate the recent electoral wins, presidential and in Georgia.

“We want to affirm the brilliance and beauty of restaurant workers and call on the new federal government to pass One Fair Wage federally to eliminate the subminimum wage that’s been around for over 150 years,” says Kaldi, who spoke about Biden’s American Rescue Plan for the first 100 days in office.

“He tied raising the minimum wage to Covid relief and called on Congress to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and to include restaurant workers in that wage hike, which is something that hasn’t happened really since the days of emancipation. This is a historic moment and a historic opportunity and so we’re coming together to celebrate and make sure that we see it through by calling on people like Feinstein and other conservative Democrats in the Senate to show solidarity with restaurant workers.”

In addition to talks by Kingston 11 owner Adrian Henderson and a local restaurant worker, the event includes a celebratory offering of 17 meals to restaurant workers who have borne the brunt of the lockdowns.
