Rhythms of the Land Screening, September 10 at Bryant Terry’s Black Food Summit

Oakland-based cultural anthropologist Dr. Gail Myers made her documentary, Rhythms of the Land, as a valentine to generations of Black farmers in the United States, from the enslavement period to the present. The film shows how an intense love of the land and dedication to community enabled these farmers to survive against overwhelming odds.

Edible East Bay readers who enjoyed this interview with Dr. Myers in our Summer 2022 issue may be looking forward to the film’s first screening, and now we are pleased to announce that it will take place on September 10 at Tom Kat Ranch in Pescadero as part of the MoAd Black Food Summit. Inspired by Terry’s latest book, Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora, the two-day (September 9 and 10) summit spans two Bay Area locations (plus virtual on 9/9) with exciting offerings each day.

On September 9, the summit meets at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco, where Bryant Terry is Chef-in-Residence. Events include thought-provoking panels navigating the ins and outs of publishing (storytelling and design) followed by a reception with sips, bites, and records spun by DJ Max Champ. These sessions are available for both in-person attendance and virtual viewing.

For the September 10 programming, the summit moves to TomKat Ranch in Pescadero for a day of experiential learning and communal leisure ending with a community supper made by some of the Bay Area’s most talented Black chefs including Chef Wanda Blake, who created this menu (and here are the recipes) for Dr. Myers’s film.
