Bubbly: 2012 L’Hereu de Nit” Raventos i Blanc Rosado Brut, $23.99: Organically grown estate grapes from this family owned winery makes one of our top selling sparkling wines. Their rosé drinks twice as expensive as it is with fine bubbles, creamy texture and elegant complexity; a wonderful way to kick of the holiday celebrations.
Pre-Feast Quaff- 2014 Vallado Rosé, $16.99: The intensity of flavor is impressive, all the more so because it comes from concentration rather than sweetness. Notes of tangy green plum, bitter orange zest, an herbal edge, and tart red cherry. A nice refreshing compliment to those light appetizers before that big heavy Thanksgiving meal.
Typical Turkey Dinner– 2011 Lalama Ribeira Sacra, $32.99: From northwestern Spain, this blend is a great medium weight red. Spice and floral notes surround a core of really pretty fruit that will work well with whatever is on your fork.
Holiday Fish Feast– 2014 Vina Godeval Cepas Vellas, $19.99: Old vine Godello from northwestern Spain. Great texture and richness of flavor, but bright and focused with a strong mineral note.
Plant-Centric Feast- 2013 Atance Bobal, $11.99: Bodegas Mustiguillo has become renowned in Spain for their work with Bobal and the winemaker from Mustiguilo is behind this great little value. Aromas of brambly berry, black olive, and coffee. Medium-bodied with bright red fruit flavors complicated by just a hint of spice, wild herbs and a citric note on the finish that focuses all the flavors nicely.
Spicy Dessert- Quinta do Vallado 10 year Tawny Port, $29.99: A nutty delight that has good sweetness without being overly so. Will pair perfectly with traditional desserts or something a bit more spiced.
Wild Card- Valdespino Contrabandista Amontillado, $28.99: A medium dry sherry It spends 8 years aging under flor and then an additional 8 years aging in the amontillado solera. A small amount of Pedro Ximenez is then added to give the juice just a bit of sweetness and roundness to the palate. Dark amber color, richly scented with aromas of smoke and toasted nuts and flavors of dried plum, spice, burnt toffee and a hint of raisin fruit. Bright acidity and nice minerality maintains the balance of flavors. As an added bonus, the label is fabulous and would be an amazing addition to the Thanksgiving table. It has the versatility to be paired up with the main course or even a wide variety of desserts, including pumpkin pie.
