What is Dominican Cuisine?

A native of New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood, Oakland Chef Nelson German of alaMar Kitchen & Bar and Sobre Mesa Afro-Latin cocktail lounge learned about the rich culture and history of his Dominican roots from his mother. His live virtual cook-along event, hosted by The Global Food and Drink Initiative, includes stories of his upbringing, his early culinary days that set the tone for his impressive career, and his journey to becoming a restaurateur. The evening closes with a toast to congratulate German’s selection as a contestant on the upcoming season of Bravo’s “Top Chef.”

Virtual Cook-Along Event: Tuesday April 6, 5–6:30pm

Ticket registration: is $10 with partial proceeds benefitting Black Joy Parade, an Oakland-based nonprofit that celebrates the Black experience and the community’s contribution to Black history and culture. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.

Cook-Along Meal Kit: Bay Area residents can order a meal kit that includes all the ingredients needed to join German’s live cooking demo plus a special cocktail inspired by Chef Nelson’s upbringing. The kit feeds two people and is available for $85 (plus 20% which includes tax and delivery) and includes event registration. Orders must be placed by 3/31 directly on Feastin.
