Winter Open House, Secret Social, & Farmstead Goodie Sale: December 11 & 12

Join K. Ruby Blume and the Institute of Urban Homesteading on December 11 and 12 for a year-end celebration of the bounty with tasting, shopping, serendipitous encounters with urban farming friends, and micro-workshops.

A seminal instigator of the Bay Area’s urban homesteading movement, Ruby now handcrafts a plethora of beautiful, tasty, and useful items on her farm in Southern Oregon. Her annual sale in Berkeley includes a wide array of small-batch, homegrown, hand-crafted goodies for sale at below-market prices and only available at this yearly sale. Find handmade mustard, low-sugar fruit-forward jam, floral cordials, shrubs, tinctures, salves, CBD on the cheap, handmade soaps, ceramic art tiles, handspun yarn, dried fruits, tomatoes, peppers, caramels, mead, pickles, lip balm, and so much more.  Lots of gorgeous gifts for $20 and under. Come grab your Secret Santa gifts, stocking stuffers, and private stash.

Micro Workshops (5–10 minutes)
Saturday 2pm: Fiber Talk & Hand Spinning demonstration
Sunday 2pm: Quick and Dirty: How to get the most from your East Bay soil

COVID Guidelines: This event takes place in a spacious private home (possibly outdoors depending on weather). Please wear your mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines. For people who are immune compromised we can arrange to have a volunteer shop for you by appointment. Please inquire at iuh@sparkybeegirl.com

About the location: 138 The Uplands, home to IUH supporter Leann Ravenel and family, is a spectacular 1912 craftsman with real East Bay charm.  This gorgeous home has tons of original craftsman woodwork and is rumored to have once housed a Buddhist temple.

Getting there: The Uplands is off Claremont Avenue in the Claremont district East of Elmwood/Rockridge.  Once you turn onto The Uplands, go about 1 mile, and the house is on the right.  Walkable/bikeable from Rockridge BART and on the 79 bus line. Please note there is a flight of stairs up to the house, so it is not wheelchair accessible.
