The theme for this year’s Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival in Berkeley’s North Shattuck District is “Chalking Beautiful Music.” Families or groups may work together, artists may work alone, but everyone comes away with a sense of pride in creating ephemeral work for everyone to enjoy.
Not an artist? Just come to shop and have fun at this street festival, which lines the blocks between Rose and Vine in North Berkeley. Find vendor booths, crafts, kids’ activities, food trucks, beer, wine, and musicians. And you’ll have lots of opportunities to eat chocolate!
Buy your chocolate-tasting tickets from the event booths at 1451, 1495 or 1607 Shattuck Ave. on the day of the event or in advance on EventBrite. Tickets are $1/ea. or 20/$20. Use them in the businesses listed for items on the Chocolate Menu which are available during the hours listed and only while supplies last. Items may be substituted. All items are sold “to-go” only. There are no refunds for leftover tickets, but you can print your email on the back and drop them into the raffle jars at the ticket booths. Raffle prizes include items from local businesses. Prizes will be mailed after the event.
There are no fees for artists. An area of sidewalk will be assigned for you to create your own fanciful chalk drawings. First 10 to pre-register at Eventbrite get a free box of chalk, and you may also purchase tickets for chocolate. Otherwise, register in person on Saturday, August 13 at the event booths at Shattuck & Vine or Shattuck & Cedar where a box of colorful artist’s chalk is available for $10 cash for a box of 24 or $20 for a box of 48.
The best drawing will be judged after 4pm. The top three winners will receive cash prizes ($150/$100/$50). Ten runners up get a $25 gift certificate from Books, Inc. Winners will be notified by Wednesday after the event. See prior winners at anotherbullwinkelshow.com/chalk-art-2021/
This is a family-friendly, free event produced by Another Bullwinkel Show and sponsored by the North Shattuck Association, City of Berkeley Civic Arts, Singha Beer, Berkeley Community Media, and Books, Inc. Take BART to Downtown Berkeley and enjoy the stroll six blocks north.
