In the heart of Oakland, a movement is growing—one plate at a time. Chef Rene Johnson, beloved for her culinary talent and community-driven mission, is being called by many “The Heartbeat of Oakland” thanks to her powerful Soul Food Stroll event series. These vibrant, family-style gatherings are more than just meals—they are acts of unity, healing, and hope.
Rooted in the spirit of the Sunday family dinner, The Soul Food Stroll is a series of inclusive community events that bring people of all backgrounds together around the table. With music, storytelling, and elevated soul food, the Strolls are designed to restore the value of togetherness while celebrating the richness of Oakland’s cultural diversity.

“We want to change the narrative—[to show] that you can go out and enjoy a good meal with your family right here in Oakland,” says Chef Rene Johnson. “Food should bring people together, not divide them.”
But Chef Rene’s impact goes far beyond the table. As a passionate food justice advocate, she is on a mission to educate families about real food and prevent childhood diabetes. Through her hands-on workshops across Oakland’s Head Start programs, she teaches parents how to cook nutritious, delicious meals with their children—building lifelong habits that lead to better health and stronger family bonds.
“I don’t just cook soul food—I cook with soul,” she says. “And I believe in feeding our kids with love, education, and real food.”

Chef Rene also makes it a point to create economic opportunity with every event. The Soul Food Stroll provides jobs for local residents—including teenagers interested in culinary careers. By introducing youth to the inner workings of a professional kitchen, Chef Rene is planting seeds of opportunity and mentorship where they’re needed most.
Her vision is clear: a better Bay Area, one bite at a time. And with each Soul Food Stroll, each family she empowers, and each young person she uplifts, Chef Rene continues to prove that food can be the soul of change.
