Open Edible Gardens 2026

Garden lovers as well as the garden curious are enjoying this summer’s Open Edible Gardens events in Oakland’s Temescal and Glenview neighborhoods.
Now in its 4th year, Temescal Open Edible Gardens Day takes place on Saturday, Aug 1 from 10am to 4pm as residents open their garden gates and invite neighbors from near and far to see their glorious veggies, fruits, and flowers and to talk about growing food using a wide range of spaces and styles. This event features a total of 20 gardens, with nine open in the morning, nine in the afternoon, and two open all day.
Last year, Edible East Bay wrote about this event, as we happily explored a variety of creative gardens filled with summer fruits and veggies and a variety of garden art installations. Vibrant hot peppers like the bright yellow banana peppers we admired last summer will be on display again this year. Organizer Jonny Prestidge, who makes hot sauce and chili powder from those peppers, says that this year’s event will feature not just veggies, fruits, and herbs, but also hydroponics, unique varietals, irrigation systems, artistic elements, vermiculture, container gardening, and more.
When gardener and Glenview resident Tanya Pham visited the Temescal event last year, she met the concept’s founder Kelly Cannon and was so inspired that she decided to create something similar in her own Glenview neighborhood. Like Cannon had done in Temescal, Pham started knocking on doors and found that gardening leads to friendships with neighbors. Thanks to Pham’s efforts, Glenview’s event took place on August 25. Be on the lookout for a repeat next year. “Sharing garden knowledge builds community,” says Pham, adding that the event is also “a creative way to explore the beauty of Oakland neighborhoods.”
