Farmers Market Blooms at Madera Elementary
Students at El Cerrito’s Madera Elementary will host a student-run farmers market on Friday, May 23 from 2:40 to 3:30 pm. The fruits, veggies, and flowers for sale were grown in the school garden, which is partially funded through a partnership with Farmigo, an online system that makes it easy to buy directly from local farmers.
The market gives students the experience of growing, harvesting, cleaning, and preparing produce to sell and teaches them the value of what’s growing in their school garden. In April, the Madera Elementary third graders held their first farmers market and raised almost $1,000 to support the garden program.
All are welcome to visit Madera Elementary on May 23 to see the students in action and enjoy freshly harvested fruits and veggies. Market organizer Molly Wahl and representatives from Farmigo will be on hand to answer questions about how they’re offering experiential education by connecting students to fresh, local, and seasonal food. Deboleena Dutta, CEO and Founder of Herb N Zest will perform a cooking demonstration using farm-fresh food provided by Farmigo.
