Creative Chefs Needed for Oakland Corner Store Delis!

Use your ingenuity and cooking skills to improve food choices in East and West Oakland. Come up with a healthy dish that can be sold at corner store delis for $5 or less. This contest is put on by HOPE, a collaborative of public agencies, community-based organizations, and Oakland residents promoting health and well-being for East and West Oakland families and youth. Chefs can choose from five categories: sandwich, wrap, or panini; salad; smoothie or juice; soup or stew; or bowl (e.g., rice or noodle bowl). Your participation helps raise awareness about the lack of healthy foods available to some Oakland residents. Entries due by September 30. Info and entry form: here

All are invited to the awards event, where you can taste and vote for your favorite dishes. Winning entries will appear in participating corner stores. Join HOPE Collaborative, MC Charlie Hallowell (Pizzaiolo, Penrose, and Boot & Shoe Service), Judge Sarah Kirnon (Miss Ollie’s), and DJ LadyRyan to show your support for healthier local food choices. A hearty meal follows the sampling. Cost: $10 and up. Info and tickets: here
