A Fresh Look at California Farmsteads
Local author Sarah Henry and photographer Erin Scott have collaborated on a delightful new book about California farms and the people who grow and harvest our food.
Farmsteads of the California Coast: With Recipes from the Harvest
by Sarah Henry, with photos by Erin Scott.
(Yellow Pear Press, 2016).
Award-winning journalist Sarah Henry, one of Edible East Bay’s favorite writers, profiles a dozen farmers and growers, highlighting their innovative, sustainable agricultural projects up and down the California coast. Illustrated with beautiful, scenic photographs from East Bay resident Erin Scott (author of blog and cookbook Yummy Supper), the book chronicles the work of row crop farmers, shellfish harvesters, a water buffalo rancher, and a coffee grower, among others. It celebrates the best of farmstead bounty, from briny oysters to creamy goat cheese, crisp heirloom apples, luscious buffalo gelato, and juicy u-pick strawberries. Twenty-four recipes inspired by farm-grown ingredients reflect the varied and delicious meals to be had from some of California’s best farmsteads. —Kristina Sepetys
