Urban Homesteader’s Winter Open House Social & Sale: Dec 3-4 in Oakland
The Institute of Urban Homesteading (IUH) is holding its annual Winter Open House Social & Sale at a unique venue—Mariposa Grove Co-Housing Community in North Oakland—and the event includes a chance to tour the community and learn about the co-housing model.
IUH founder K.Ruby Blume says, “There will be more beautiful and tasty goodies than ever this year including mead, aperitifs, jam, tiles, mustard, salsa, cordials, tinctures, catnip mice, dream pillows, salves, lip balms, sheep pelts, seed packets, and so much more, plus tasting on a limited and safe basis.”
You’ll find lots of great small gifts for under $20, only available once a year direct from Ruby’s farm.
Micro-Workshops: Come on Saturday for K.Ruby Blume’s 3pm demo and talk about milling, spinning, and dyeing wool. The Sunday 2pm workshop, called Quick and Dirty, talks about how to get the most from your East Bay soil. This will be a brief explanation of soil ecology and amendment.
Mariposa Grove Tour: Interested in the co-housing model? Mariposa Grove member Diane Dew will be available to answer questions and will give a tour of the property at 12:30pm each day. Started in 1998 by a founder dedicated to activism, art, and affordable housing, Mariposa Grove Co-Housing is a democratically governed community that includes both renters and homeowners. The land is now owned by the Northern California Land Trust, which enforces resale price limits to keep units affordable. There are currently sixteen adults, one teenager and four children living at Mariposa Grove. As well as the individual units, members share gardens, a chicken coop, and a common house with guest rooms, art room, kids’ play space, an office, a large kitchen, and dining space. Each unit has its own kitchen, but the large kitchen/dining space is used for community meals, parties, movie nights and meetings.

Getting There: This year’s location is centrally located in North Oakland, just off MLK. Very bikeable and walking distance from the Ashby BART station. Parking is a little more difficult in this area, so plan to park a block or two away and walk to reduce traffic impact right at the site. I am sorry that the location is not wheelchair accessible. There is a flight of stairs.
