East Bay Urban Foodscape Tour: March 27

Bay Area Green Tours shared the five scenes on the left as examples from past food tours. A stop on this year’s tour will be at Oakland Bloom’s Understory Worker-Led Restaurant (photo by Scott Peterson), which features in Edible East Bay‘s Spring 2024 story on That Hausa Vegan.

Now in its 35th year, Bioneers hosts social and scientific innovators who explore solutions to global environmental and social challenges. As the annual conference returns to Berkeley on March 28–30, it starts out with a pre-conference urban food and farming tour hosted by Bay Area Green Tours. Heading out on Wednesday, March 27, the 2024 Urban Foodscape Tour: Innovators Nourishing the East Bay is a perfect lead into the Bioneers conference. During this day-long guided experience, you’ll learn about groundbreaking developments in the East Bay related to urban farming, workforce development, the climate crisis, and food justice.

Tour stops:

  • Alameda Point Collaborative A supportive housing community hosting an urban farm, a garden nursery, and workforce development programs, all aligned to create sustainable futures for underserved populations in the SF Bay Area
  • Farm2Market An urban community farm in Alameda, supporting an underserved community by stewarding the land and sharing the bounty
  • Ploughshares Nursery A social enterprise advancing the local community by showing how to make a home garden part of the climate solution
  • Understory Oakland A queer, POC worker-owned restaurant collective in partnership with Oakland Bloom, a group committed to fighting for equity in the food industry
  • REAP Climate Center A maker space for all ages to learn, contribute to, and experiment with nature-based solutions
  • Bluma Flower Farm Local, sustainable urban agriculture helping to preserve biodiversity by growing certified organic flowers on a rooftop farm in Berkeley

Bella Lenestour and John Allen, who attended the 2023 tour, say they’ll join again this year. “We were so inspired by the presenters and the work they are doing.”
